Ho'okipa Beach, located on Maui's northshore, is a 2-minutes' drive east of Paia town and best known for spectacular island views from it's lookout, amazing surfing during large winter swells, acrobatic pro windsurfers, kitesurfers and foil surfers year-round, and honu or green sea turtles sunbathing on the beach most days (keep your distance please, these honu are an endangered species).
Bypass the first entrance to the park when driving from Paia town, since it's actually an exit of the one-way drive through the park. Turn left on the 2nd entrance to the lookout for some of the best sightseeing on the island and then stroll down to the beach to watch surfers and see the honu at a distance (30' is required).
OCEAN SAFETY: Please note that many of these photos are taken on calm summer days. Not all summer days are calm and winter, fall and spring months with high surf are reserved for advanced surfers, windsurfers and ocean sports athletes only. No snorkeling on high surf days. Calm days also have strong currents and exposed reef at this beach, so best to watch surfers from the beach or check with lifeguards before entering the ocean. Better beaches for novice surfers can be found on Maui's southshore.
