Paddle Sports have grown tremendously in all of Hawaii and particularly in Maui both for traditional outrigger canoeing and the "latest/greatest" paddle sport, standup-paddling or SUP, on large "surfboards", which opens up the ocean for just about anyone who wants to "paddle out" on a calm day with no surf. There are challenges available once the surf comes up to also do "SUP surfing". Also, both outrigger canoeing for one-man, or OC-1, and SUP have now evolved to include the unique separate discipline of "downwind surfing" which is well suited to the windy areas of Maui, mainly the northshore during most of the year, but also the southshore. Of course, ocean kayaking (in the plastic boats) has been a popular activity for decades on Maui and continues to be so.
